About

The Architectural History and Resources Committee invites you to explore the rich architectural heritage of Hartford’s Historic West End.

This primarily residential area consists of houses in various styles built mostly in the period from the 1890’s to the 1920’s. The neighborhood includes seven National Register of Historic Places Historic Districts; Little Hollywood Historic District (1982), Prospect Avenue Historic District (1985), West End North Historic District (1985), West End South Historic District (1985), West Boulevard Historic District (2007), Oxford-Whitney Streets Historic District (2010), and Sisson-South Whitney Historic District (2013). To learn more about Historic Districts and the protections they provide, please see the “Resources” page linked below.

Other significant buildings include the 1920’s collegiate gothic style campus of the University of Connecticut School of Law (formerly the Hartford Seminary Foundation), the Hartford International University for Religion & Peace building, 1981, by architect Richard Meier (also formerly the Hartford Seminary Foundation), the A. Everett Austin House (1930), and the Connecticut Governor’s Residence (1909).

The Committee meets monthly to plan and execute a number of events to promote appreciation for the neighborhood’s history and architecture. To learn more about our work and how you might join our team, please email John Rose, committee chair, at: ahr@wecahartford.org.
